This is the rundown sheet for a taping of FRONT ROW. The former Friday night public affairs staple was recorded live in our studios on Fridays (sometimes earlier if it was a holiday), mere hours before it was broadcast. To keep things topical, of course. I spied this rundown attached to the cameras the night before one of the tapings and snapped this pic.
We stopped airing FRONT ROW in early 2023, replacing it with our own STATE LINES.
“What makes me different is a simple fact that I’m not a politician. Politicians lie. That’s why people struggle with who to vote for. When politicians may or may not telling the truth, who can you trust? Someone who isn’t a politician! Exactly.” – Ros Pritchard (Jane Horrocks), making a campaign speech, THE AMAZING MRS. PRITCHARD on MASTERPIECE THEATRE
When he appeared on SESAME STREET, Ian McKellen taught what Muppet the meaning of the word resist?
One of the marvelous things about the long-running children’s series SESAME STREET (and I’m sure most will agree there are many marvelous things about it) is the guest stars that pop up. From Tony Hawk to Richard Pryor, guest stars sing songs, act in skits and generally lend an air of pop culture credo and gravitas to an award-winning educational show.
When Sir Ian McKellen appeared in a December 2014 episode, he helped one of the program’s Muppet characters learn about the word “resist” in a piece that even referenced his turn as Gandalf in “The Lord Of The Rings” franchise.
So who was it? What Muppet got Sir Ian’s instruction on the word “resist” in a 2014 SESAME STREET episode?

Did Read-A-Roo get cloned? Not quite. These are just Read-A-Roo stand up displays on corrugated plastic that might be used for some community event, like a county fair or a Rootle Roadster tour stop. Anywhere Read-A-Roo pops up to delight the kids, you could see these displayed to let folks know they are indeed in the presence of marsupial greatness.
Here’s what was airing 38 years ago on the airwaves of the UNC Center for Public Television…
May 23 was a Friday that year and the night began with public affairs so not much has changed there. THE MACNEIL/LEHRER NEWSHOUR and THE NIGHTLY BUSINESS REPORT kicked off the evening, followed by the local production NORTH CAROLINA THIS WEEK (the STATE LINES of its day).
WASHINGTON WEEK IN REVIEW and WALL $TREET WEEK were the prime time anchors and GREAT PERFORMANCES came in at its usual slot of 9pm.
At 10pm, the British program MAPP & LUCIA aired. Based on the books by E. F. Benson, the charming series starred Prunella Scales (Fawlty Towers) and Geraldine McEwan (Marple) in the title roles. British telly continued at 11pm with the sci fi classic DOCTOR WHO and the sketch comedy of DAVE ALLEN AT LARGE
[Side note: Apologies for the askew scan but Centerpiece changed from its original 10″x7″ size to the current 11″x7″ form and that threw off the binding of the 1986 collection so it was difficult to get a centered pic.]
