My Top Five: Celebrity Near Misses

Some time back, I listed MY TOP FIVE CELEBRITY ENCOUNTERS. The point being, in television, you get to meet some of the folks who produce or star in the programs that get broadcast. It’s always cool to met celebrities, especially if they are personable and don’t mind saying hello. However, the down side of this is that sometimes these celebs are not so easily met. Here are a few examples of just that – celebrities I could have met but completely failed to, for whatever reason.

Thus, I present: MY TOP FIVE: CELEBRITY NEAR MISSES.

5) DENNIS DEYOUNG. While certainly not a household name, Dennis DeYoung is well known to many rock fans, Styx fans in particular. He wrote and sang lead on many of the band’s tunes, including Lady, Come Sail Away, Babe and Mr. Roboto. DeYoung appeared in our studios during a pledge drive for his special Dennis DeYoung and the Music of Styx. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to meet the man responsible for a lot of the favorite music of my youth. Continue reading

Hey, It’s Photo Friday!

Another dip into the archives for a look into UNC-TV’s past. This week, a vintage pic from the set of the UNC-TV original series ALMANAC GARDENER. I certainly recognize Mike Gray, host of the show. The others are not immediately known to me. One appears to be the host of a cooking segment and the others may be a producer, director or even a guest. I estimate the photograph to be from the early days of the series so this could be taken on a set from our old studios in Raleigh.

Hey, It’s Photo Friday!

Earlier this week, North Carolina Bookwatch welcomed special guest Fred Thompson, author of Bacon: A Savor the South Cookbook. The episode was recorded in the UNC-TV studios in front of a live audience and followed by a light reception and meet-&-greet with Thompson and Bookwatch host D. G. Martin.

Taking the lead from Thompson’s book, there was a lot of bacon on hand.

UNC-TV’s Emily McIntosh took the following pictures of this special event. Try not to drool!

Dinner At The White House?

If you like to eat healthy and would love a chance to dine at the White House, PBS Parents may have just the contest for you.

The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge & Kids’ “State Dinner” contest is underway and open to children 8 to 12 and their parents or guardians. A winner will be chosen from each state and the winning child chef (along with accompanying adult) will be flown to D.C. where they will have the opportunity to attend the Kids’ “State Dinner.”
