Flashback: July 1999

The year was 1999 and the cover of our Centerpiece monthly program magazine was – colorful!

THE LIFE OF BIRDS WITH SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH was the feature story, as you can well see (“Who’s a pretty bird?”). Other programs mentioned were a NOVA about the first moon landing, POV’s 12th season and two specials highlighting sporting events taking place in North Carolina that year – The US Open golf tournament and the 1999 Special Olympics World Games.

Flashback: September 1994

29 years ago, the Ken Burns mini-series BASEBALL debuted on PBS. If you weren’t around then you may not remember what a big deal BASEBALL was. Being Burns’ first major series since the landmark offering of THE CIVIL WAR a few years prior, we were eager to see if the documentary wunderkind could pull off a repeat or if TCW merely lightning in a bottle. As such, we promoted it heavily on and off air. Giving it the prime spot on our monthly programming guide CenterPiece was a no-brainer.

Hey, It’s Photo Friday!

AMERICA AT A CROSSROADS was a series of documentaries hosted by journalist Robert MacNeil that were first broadcast in the late aughts. The series examined the challenges confronting the post-9/11 world, focusing on such subjects as the war on terrorism, the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the experience of American troops, the struggle for balance within the Islamic world and Muslim life in America.

I don’t recall much about the program itself but I do remember it on a regular basis because of this nifty little souvenir: a compass featuring the AMERICA AT A CROSSROADS logo.
