Wednesday Trivia Question

Where did the Duke go on MISS SCARLET & THE DUKE?

MISS SCARLET & THE DUKE premiered on MASTERPIECE in January 2021 and ran for four seasons (more on that in a moment). It starred Kate Phillips and Stuart Martin in the title roles. Miss Scarlet is Eliza Scarlet, an ambitious Victorian Era private detective, and the Duke is police detective inspector William “Duke” Wellington of the Metropolitan Police.

As she struggles to make a name for herself, Eliza makes allies and earns respect from the men in charge. And she and the Duke seem to be growing closer. In fact, a romance appeared to be the natural course of action. So when William confessed his love to Miss Scarlet, he also announced plans to leave. Which he does. And he did not come back.

In fact, the fifth series (which we hope will air sometime next year) is called simply MISS SCARLET. No Duke. So whether the actor left or the character was just written out, it appears as though Miss Scarlet and the Duke are not destined to be together.

The question remains: what happened to William Wellington? Where did the Duke go on MISS SCARLET & THE DUKE?

Wednesday Trivia Question

Who drove a Regency red 1960 Jaguar Mark 2 2.4L car with number plate 248 RPA?

This is a very specific question about a very specific character and a very specific car. I don’t want to offer too many clues lest I give the game away. Suffice it to say, the character who drives said vehicle is a well-known character whose series was aired as part of a long-running anthology. The character was British and was known for solving crimes. Surely, that narrows it down some but still gives you plenty of possibilities. I think fans of the series will recognize it instantly, of course.

So who was it? Who drove a Regency red 1960 Jaguar Mark 2 2.4L car with number plate 248 RPA?

“Look, I’ll be honest with you, this whole Caribbean thing, I mean, I’m sure it’s very nice, but uh… well, it’s not really my idea of, uh… yeah. So, as soon as I’ve solved this case, and I’ve got my luggage, I’m on the next plane home. I can’t think why they sent me.” – DI Richard Poole (Ben Miller), confiding in Sgt. Lily Thompson (Lenora Crichlow), DEATH IN PARADISE (“Arriving In Paradise”)

Wednesday Trivia Question

Where was John Barnaby stationed before transferring to Midsomer’s Causton CID?

MIDSOMER MURDERS is a Saturday night staple ’round these parts. PBS NC has been airing the UK import since the summer of 2014. It’s proven to be very popular with viewers and so far we’ve broadcast 21 seasons. The show initially followed DCI Tom Barnaby (John Nettles) but when he left after series 13 his cousin John stepped in to fill his shoes. So DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) is the current detective on duty when the quaint county of Midsomer falls victim to the odd case of manslaughter.

The character of John Barnaby first appeared in Nettles’ last season when the copper cousins joined forces. It seemed a natural fit then for the DCI to move to Midsomer when Tom retired.

So the question concerns John’s original posting (original as seen in the series). Where was it? Where was DCI John Barnaby stationed before transferring to Midsomer’s Causton CID on MIDSOMER MURDERS?
