Flashback: March 1991

What’s Fred Astaire doing on the cover of CenterPiece? Well, certainly it can be said our on-air pledge drive Festival (as it was called then) was a time for celebration, maybe even a little dancing. But it turns out one of the programs we were airing during March of 1991 was THE FRED ASTAIRE SONGBOOK on GREAT PERFORMANCES.

A few of the other specials we broadcast during this fundraiser were NORTH CAROLINA IS MY HOME with Charles Kuralt, OF MOOSE AND MEN: THE ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE STORY, BIG BIRD’S BIRTHDAY: LET ME EAT CAKE and RED SKELTON: A ROYAL COMMAND PERFORMANCE. Maybe you were watching Festival way back when. If so, thank you for your support.

“Welcome to the annual Freight Train Blues Concert Series, celebrating the life and legacy of Piedmont blues legend Elizabeth ‘Libba’ Cotten. Born in 1893 in Carrboro, North Carolina, some of Cotten’s best known compositions reside in the canon of American music, with noted covers by the Grateful Dead, Joan Baez and Doc Watson. Today, her legacy is being discovered by a new generation of artists and performers.” – Narrator (Freddy Jenkins), introducing the series FREIGHT TRAIN BLUES
