Even back then we began the day with kids shows. The late morning and afternoon was filled with an interesting mix of how-to, public affairs, science and sci fi. Longtime viewers may remember that DOCTOR WHO occupied Saturday afternoons for a few years with full serials on the weekends (spoiler: “Planet of the Spiders” was the one where Jon Pertwee regenerates into Tom Baker).
Our very own WOODWRIGHT’S SHOP was up at 6pm, followed by the movie review series SNEAK PREVIEWS. For those that remember SNEAK PREVIEWS as the show that made Siskel and Ebert national names, keep in mind that the duo left in 1982 to start their own show and were replaced by Jeffrey Lyons and Neal Gabler. Michael Medved came in to take take over for Gabler in 1985 but I don’t know exactly when.
Some nature programming was then on tap with PROFILES OF NATURE and WILD, WILD WORLD OF ANIMALS and THE SEA: A QUEST FOR OUR FUTURE. At 9pm, JAMES MICHENER’S U.S.A. followed the noted author as he explored the nation that so inspired his work. ENCORE featuring a performance by Dave Brubeck was at 10pm and the British cult series THE PRISONER ended the evening with some surreal action.
