When Edith Crawley had a romance with publisher Michael Gregson, their dalliance ended in her pregnancy. By the time Edith realized her predicament, however, Gregson had disappeared (later it would be known that he was killed in Germany). Unmarried and with child, Edith weighed her options, eventually giving birth secretly to a daughter in Switzerland (with the aid of her aunt, Lady Rosamund Painswick). The child was adopted by Swiss parents, later by a farmer and his wife near Downton when Edith desired to be closer to her offspring. Later, the young girl would be taken in by Edith and her family would come to know the details of her true parentage.
