Hey, It’s Photo Friday!

The NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC BEE was a competition for fourth to eighth graders that ran from 1989 to 2019 (it was cancelled in 2020 and 2021). Sort of a geography equivalent to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the NAT GEO BEE was hosted by Alex Trebek for the first quarter century and was broadcast on PBS stations for many years. I know we aired the program as recently as 2012 (perhaps it was just the finals – hard to remember the last telecast I saw).

The inflatable globe below was produced by Maryland Public Television, the presenting station of the GEO BEE, and sent to us (and other PBS stations) as a memento/reminder of the availability of the Bee. I’m not sure when but it’s been around our station for quite a while. It may be one of the original bits of promotional swag for the program.
