Deep Dive: Mr. Rogers & David Letterman

Fred Rogers is an American icon, a television legend whose example lives on two decades after his passing. During his time, Fred Rogers didn’t do much television outside of his own long-running children’s series. If you peruse his imdb page you’ll see a TV special here and there, an appearance on a game show, a guest stint on a drama series and a handful of chat show drop ins. One of these was THE DAVID LETTERMAN SHOW.

Back before Dave first got his late night gig on NBC, taking over the post-Carson timeslot from Tom Snyder, he had a show (all too briefly) on daytime. Surprisingly, Fred Rogers was a guest on that morning show. It may seem an unusual match – Letterman’s brand of snark vs. Rogers’ gentle compassion – but the interview works because you can’t not love and respect Mister Rogers (even if you’re David Letterman sometimes trying to be too cool for the room).
