Wednesday Trivia Question

Who was Jon Pertwee’s first wife?

Actor Jon Pertwee will be best known to public television viewers as Doctor #3 on the long-running science fiction series DOCTOR WHO. His tenure was from 1970 to 1974 (five seasons, 128 episodes) but he also popped up in the 20th Anniversary adventure “The Five Doctors” in 1983 and the charity special “Dimensions In Time” produced ten years later.

Pertwee, who passed away in 1996 at the age of 76, had a career that spanned decades on stage, radio, television and film. His credits include roles in the comedy film franchise CARRY ON, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM (both on stage and screen), the Disney movie ONE OF OUR DINOSAURS IS MISSING, the kids series WORZEL GUMMIDGE and the animated Welsh program SUPERTED. He had guest appearances in everything from the British spy series THE AVENGERS to THE YOUNG INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES on ABC here in the states.

He was in the Royal Navy during World War II, worked as a circus performer and was known as a Danny Kaye lookalike. Basically, his life and career was pretty amazing and impressive.

In 1955, Jon Pertwee married an English actress. They divorced in 1960 and Pertwee later remarried (his second marriage lasted until his death). His first wife should be well known to public broadcasting viewers. Like Pertwee, she has a long and storied career and has appeared in films and television programs in the UK and the US.

So who is she? Who was Jon Pertwee’s first wife?

It was Jean Marsh. PBS viewers will probably best know her from UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS (a series she co-created). She also appeared in other shows we’ve broadcast, including DOCTOR WHO (although not opposite her ex).
