Hey, It’s Photo Friday!

We’re doing some work in one of our production studios and I noticed this sign:

Hey, It’s Photo Friday!

I often talk about the amazing variety of fauna that can be seen on the grounds of and in the surrounding forest by the UNC-TV studios. In my time here, I’ve spotted deer, opossum, raccoon, ducks, squirrels, geese, egret, groundhog and all sorts of songbird. There may even be a few others I’ve forgotten but last week I saw something new. it was a wild turkey! (At least I think it’s a wild turkey – I can’t recall ever seeing one in person, let alone at UNC-TV, and it matches pictures I’ve found online.) The turkey was scavenging next to our driveway and I saw the gobbler as I was arriving for work. I pulled over and snapped a few pics and the bird scarpered off into the woods.

I haven’t spied the fowl since this initial encounter but I’ll keep an eye out. Here it is…

Because the numerous PBS Kids shows we air lend themselves so readily to toy sales, you can often find examples of such products in the offices and cubicles around UNC-TV. Here’s a fine example of a Sesame Street character adorning the name plate outside a colleague’s office.

I’d wager the grouchy nature of the small plush is merely exhibited ironically and not intended as a blanket statement of her approachability.

As you approach our facilities in the Research Triangle Park, the first sign you’re in the right vicinity is our broadcast tower which looms high over the treeline. However, this little notice at the Alexander Drive entrance says to volunteers and guests alike, “You’ve reached your destination!”

Welcome To UNC-TV!

When our Festival pledge drive ended in March, we all got parting gifts. Well, maybe that’s too flip but someone (I’m still not certain who the responsible party is) left pens as a reward for everyone’s contribution to our annual fundraiser. It’s a nice gift and really goes to prove that each and every member of the UNC-TV family is a valuable part of Festival and their hard work is very much appreciated.

No, thank you!

UNC-TV has a repurposing center in the breakroom where employees can leave items for others to use. The lowest shelf is marked “for personal use” and I like to check it out occasionally to see what items folks have abandoned.

Today, I discovered this VHS tape for Reading Rainbow. Since I may be one of the few folks left in the building who still uses a VCR (trust me – out of necessity, not desire), I snapped it up quickly. Not much market for an outdated media like VHS, but I’ll hang onto it for a while. If nothing else, it makes a great conversation piece.
