A New Face In The Neighborhood

Fred Rogers died nearly fifteen years ago but the children’s TV host left behind an enormous legacy far beyond 30+ seasons of one of the most beloved television series ever. This year alone, the Morgan Neville documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? premiered at Sundance and PBS is celebrating 50 years of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood with Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like in March. Now, the word from Tinseltown is that none other than Tom Hanks will be portraying Rogers in a new film based on the late TV personality’s life.

You Are My Friend has been acquired by TriStar Pictures and is set to begin production in September. The feature film is inspired by a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. Marielle Heller will direct and the screenplay is by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster.

There’s no release date as yet, obviously. But I’m sure I join the legions of Mr. Rogers fans out there who’ll be eagerly awaiting this film’s arrival in the Cineplex.
