Where Do I Know That Actor?

Fans of Father Brown on the Explorer Channel may have noticed some familiar-ish faces on last Friday’s episode (“The Star Of Jacob” – in which a mysterious stranger, a missing donkey and a kidnapped baby threaten to spoil Christmas festivities). Let’s meet them, shall we?

Raymond Coulthard, who played John Langdon in the episode, will be best known as Miles Edgerton on Mr. Selfridge. Aside from guest roles in programs like Is It Legal? and Foyle’s War, Coulthard has been seen in several other Masterpiece series. He was Mr. Glascock in He Knew He Was Right, Prince of Arragon in Merchant Of Venice and the Venetian Ambassador in Casanova. Continue reading

My Top Five: Detectives

There are loads of private investigators to choose from on the many series UNC-TV has broadcast over the decades. One series alone (Mystery!) is pretty much devoted to the genre. So I started thinking: who are my personal favorite detectives?

I tried to gravitate towards characters that are sleuths first and foremost rather than police constables who utilize procedure to apprehend criminals. A fine line, I agree – but it narrowed the focus a bit.

As always, these are MY TOP FIVE. Not the best, not the most popular – just my personal favorites. Thus, without further ado, here are MY TOP FIVE: DETECTIVES…

5) The Gumshoes of ACME, Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? – The sleuths of ACME come perilously close to falling under the “police” category since they are part of an organization, but they are gumshoes (it’s in their name) so I had to include them. Throw in Special Agent Greg Lee and Lynne Thigpen as The Chief and the WITWICS gumshoes will always be cool. Continue reading

Where Do I Know That Actor?

Mystery fans may have noticed that the series Father Brown has returned Saturday nights on UNC-EX. The second episode (“The Flying Stars”) featured a trio of guest stars keen viewers may know from other series. Now, keep in mind these are major stars, by any means. However, I think it’s neat to connect the dots sometimes and point out actors that may spark a recollection in the dark recesses of memory.

Amy Morgan played Ruby Adams. She hasn’t been in a lot of television roles but her most recent should be well known to Masterpiece watchers: Morgan has been Grace on Mr. Selfridge for the past two seasons.

Next, Julian Wadham played Colonel Adams on the Father Brown episode in question. He’s guest starred here and there (Silk, Downton Abbey, Foyle’s War) but, going back a bit, he was Sir James Chettam on a mid-90s Masterpiece adaptation of Middlemarch.

Lastly, Dan Fredenburgh was James Trewlove but he may be remembered as John Knightley from Emma on Masterpiece circa 2009.

Got a face you can’t place from one of the plethora of programs UNC-TV airs from the UK? Email me at sparkymac@unctv.org and I’ll try to help out.
