Wednesday Trivia Question

What character from fiction has been portrayed on television by Joan Hickson, Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie?

I think this is a fairly simple and straightforward question yet I don’t feel I can give too many clues without giving the answer away. Suffice it to say the actresses above have all played the same character in different series (albeit two in the same series). The character is well known and was created by one of 20th century’s most famous authors. The series all ran on PBS. So who is it? In what role would you have seen Hickson, McEwan and McKenzie?

The answer is Jane Marple aka Miss Marple. The elderly spinster, who lives in the village of St. Mary Mead and acts as an amateur consulting detective, first appeared in a 1927 short story by Christie in “The Royal Magazine.” She went on to appear in twelve crime novels and an additional 19 short stories. From 1984 to 1992, the BBC adapted the Miss Marple novels and they aired in the US as part of MYSTERY! London’s ITV presented AGATHA CHRISTIE’S MISS MARPLE starting in 2004 featuring Geraldine McEwan in the title role for the first three seasons. Julia McKenzie took over in series four. These, too, aired on MYSTERY (now MASTERPIECE MYSTERY).
