If you caught last week’s Doc Martin on UNC-TV’s Explorer Channel, you may have noticed a trio of guest stars that you’ve seen before from other programs.
The episode in question (“Born With A Shotgun”) allowed us to meet Aunt Ruth’s neighbors and the grandfather of Dr. Ellingham’s new receptionist.
The Dunwiches were played by Andrew Lee Potts (son, Michael) and Miriam Margolyes (mother, Shirley). Potts has guest starred on series like Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and Foyle’s War but may be best known as Nero on Warrior Queen, a Masterpiece Theatre presentation starring Alex Kingston (the UK title was Boudica). Miriam Margolyes has most recently been seen as Phryne’s Aunt Prudence on Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries but fans of the TV series Wonderworks may remember her as Miss Amelia in A Little Princess.
Veteran character actor Peter Vaughan, who played Jessica’s grandfather William Newcross, had a career that spanned seven decades. He passed away last month at the age of 93 but, along the way, he appeared in everything from The Pallisers to Lark Rise To Candleford. Some of the more notable roles include Michael Colchester in The Jury, Mr. Boffin in Our Mutual Friend, Gabriel Betteredge in Moonstone, Frank Ashworth in The Choir and Tulkinghorn in Bleak House (all on Masterpiece Theatre). He also played Widdicombe in Malice Aforethought, a 2005 Mystery! presentation.
