Thought I’d tackle the series DCI Banks this week. I believe I’ve mentioned the program before but it’s got a few regulars of note and a guest star worth mentioning so I’ll have another go.
Stephen Tomkinson stars in the title role. He’s certainly a name familiar to UNC-TV viewers since been seen in as Father Peter Clifford on Ballykissangel, Trevor Purvis on Grafters and Mark Roberts on Shades. Tomkinson also starred in the Masterpiece Theatre adaptation of Kingsley Amis’ Lucky Jim.
Caroline Catz plays Helen Morton on the series and if you recognize her from anything it’s most likely Doc Martin where she plays Louisa.
Jack Deam is Ken Blackstone on DCI Banks but he’s also been seen as another copper on another series – he’s Inspector Mallory on Father Brown.
Shaun Dingwall, who plays Chief Superintendent Colin Anderson, has been in a few series you may have seen. In the late 1990s, Dingwall was Mark Rivers on the Mystery! series Tocuhing Evil. A few years back, he portrayed Charlie Enderbury on the Masterpiece presentation Breathless. However, my personal favorite is his role as Pete Tyler (Rose’s father) on Doctor Who.
Shaun Dooley is DC Steve Richards. He was Joe Gargery on Great Expectations and Mr. Holly on South Riding, both on Masterpiece. EastEnders fans may recall him as Reverend Tom Stuart, a role he played from 2001 to 2004.
Clare Calbraith, who guest starred as Alice Finn in this week’s episode (“To Burn In Every Drop Of Blood”), also played maid Jane Moorsum on season two of Downton Abbey. She’s also Steph Farrow on Home Fires – the final season of which begins in April on Masterpiece.
The new series of DCI Banks continues Saturdays at 10pm on UNC-TV.
Got a face you can’t place from one of the plethora of programs UNC-TV airs from the UK? Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll try to help out.
