Where Do I Know That Actor? (Looking Ahead Edition)

It’s Friday, day five, and here we go again with another familiar face seen on UNC-TV. Or rather, will be seen.

Okay, I admit I’m cheating the premise a bit here but I wanted to call your attention to this Saturday night’s episode of Doctor Who on UNC-TV. It’s called “The Fires of Pompeii” and features not one but two actors who will become series regulars, one even in the title role.

In the episode, the Doctor and Donna travel back to, as the title might suggest, the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. He encounters a family, the patriarch of which is Lucius Caecilius Iucundus as played by actor Peter Capaldi. Now, Capaldi has appeared in all sorts of shows we’ve aired on UNC-TV, everything from Prime Suspect to The Vicar of Dibley, but he’s the guy who currently stars in Doctor Who as the Twelfth Doctor (UNC-TV has yet to air those episodes but I certainly hope we’ll get to them).

The other person to look for is Karen Gillan in the role of the Soothsayer. Gillan will become the companion of the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) when she plays Amy Pond in upcoming seasons. To my knowledge, she hasn’t appeared in anything that UNC-TV has aired before. (I could be wrong and welcome the correction.)

As Doctor Who fans know, this is not unheard of. The Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, appeared in the serial “The Arc Of Infinity” as Time Lord Commander Maxil during the program’s 20th season. However, I think it’s a pretty rare occurrence to have two such major actors appear during the same episode in different roles before they became series regulars.

Doctor Who‘s “The Fires of Pompeii” airs Saturday at 11pm on UNC-TV. The episode repeats Monday morning at 4 on UNC-TV, Thursday and noon on UNC-MX and November 14 at 4pm on UNC-MX.

Hey, It’s Photo Friday!

I don’t know who owns it. I don’t know where it came from. I just know that this Roy Underhill bobblehead is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen in my time here at UNC-TV.

It currently occupies a space in our Network Operations Center and if we haven’t offered this thing up as a premium during pledge we’ve made a serious error in my opinion.
