Let’s talk Doctor Who for a minute. Those who know me will tell you I am always willing to talk Doctor Who, but let’s put it in perspective of “Where do I know that actor?”
Doctor Who, starring David Tennant as the Doctor, airs Saturday nights at 11 on UNC-TV (repeating Mondays at 4am). It also airs on UNC-MX Thursday at noon and Saturdays at 4. UNC-MX also broadcasts classic episodes of Doctor Who, with Jon Pertwee’s Doctor, every Saturday at 5.
Anyone who has ever watched the program knows that guest stars abound. I think you can’t call your career complete in the UK unless you get a role on Midsomer Murders and Doctor Who. This past Saturday’s Doctor Who on UNC-TV was the fan-favorite episode “Blink.” The episode features a young actress who, when the show originally aired in 2007, was definitely not the celebrity she is now. She has since gone on to star in TV series and feature films and even be nominated for an Academy Award. The actress? Carey Mulligan. She played Sally Sparrow in a very interesting Doctor Who episode where the titular Time Lord was more of a bit player than the usual star.
I should hope that everyone knows Carey Mulligan by name, if not by reputation, but she does have a public television connection in addition to her guest starring role on Doctor Who. Mulligan played Ada in Bleak House on Masterpiece Theatre in 2006. She was also Emily in The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard and Isabella on Northanger Abbey, both of which Masterpiece aired the following year.
Very cool, don’t you think? An Oscar-nominated actor on Doctor Who. And I’ll let you know this – she’s not the only one. More on that in the future.
“Blink” encores Thursday at noon on UNC-MX.
Got a face you can’t place from one of the plethora of programs UNC-TV airs from the UK? Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll try to help out.
